The major emphasis in 数据科学 is available to students majoring in CIS. The curriculum focuses on computer modeling, 可视化, and data analysis across large sets of information for the purpose of complex problem solving. 课程 like 信息可视化, 数据科学 and Advanced Data Analysis give students a strong foundation in 数据科学 concepts that benefit them in internships and early career opportunities.

The minor in 数据科学 is available only to students not majoring in CIS. Like the 数据科学 major emphasis, it will introduce students to the practice of data science, an interdisciplinary field which includes statistical analysis and modeling, ethical data collection and storage, 信息可视化, 计算机编程, and oral and written communication. 课程 like Advanced Data Analysis, 实验心理学, 基因组学, 业务分析, 实验哲学, and 人工智能 give students a strong foundation in 数据科学 concepts that enhance their major course of study and benefit them in internships and early career opportunities.

The experiences CIS majors accumulate as students prepare them well for a range of jobs across industries. Our graduates have developed careers in software development, 业务分析, 项目管理, social media and marketing management; I.T. consulting; game design; web design; UI/UX 研究; database management, and information security.

W&J’s CIS program prioritizes hands-on practice. Activities in the classroom and off-campus internships help students apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Internships have included cybersecurity 研究, data migration and data analysis, and healthcare records implementation. These positions prepare them for careers in technology firms of all sizes, 私营企业, 非营利组织, as well as rigorous post-secondary programs.

Our students find success before they even leave campus. Jakerra Lance, 22岁 earned a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) with the University of Austin Texas through the National Science Foundation, and used her skills as a CIS and history double major to work on an independent 可视化 project with the Cyberinfrastructure Research 4 Social Change 活网站.

CIS majors also apply their skills at local non-profit organizations with an unmet technology need during their capstone course, Service Learning Project Management. Our students have worked with WashPa Outdoors, Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA (DVSSP), 华盛顿县食品银行, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) on projects ranging from creating a local bird-finding app, promoting conservation education, and analyzing information security management.
